Find out the core causes of waking up with headaches frequently

Sleep is a precious factor for attaining the ideal fresh start to the day and if you wake up with a headache after sleep frequently, it definitely affects the quality of day that you are going to spend. Nobody wants to wake up with a disturbing and throbbing headache in the morning and to avoid this there are several factors to avoid.


This is the most common problem which headache sufferers complain of. Insomnia is a condition where people find it difficult to fall or stay asleep, they wake up early not being able to fulfill a good night’s sleep.  Lying awake at night often leads to anxiety, depression, fatigue, poor attention and concentration and loss of motivation.

Snoring and sleep apnea

Snoring or obstructive sleep apnea are the second most common sleep issues reported by headache sufferers. Snoring involves heavy breathing and can be a condition on its own or a symptom of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs where a person stops breathing at times throughout the night.

Sleep disturbances caused by sleep apnea can result in insomnia which leads to morning headaches. Some research suggests that treating sleep apnea reduces the amount and severity of headaches.

Strained muscles

Waking up to a headache can be a result of strained neck muscles. Pillows play an important role in properly positioning your neck and spine. It should support the neck and spine in such a way which is similar to when you are standing.

Finding the right pillow for a proper sleeping position is essential for avoiding morning headaches. A soft pillow may not hold your neck and spine and a hard one may create too significant of an angle for your body. Much trial and error go into selecting the right kind of pillow for a perfect sleeping posture, but it will be worth the try to get rid of waking up to headaches.

Use of alcohol and medications

Certain medications can also be responsible for morning headaches. These medicines may interfere with your sleep patterns, resulting in disruptive sleep and headaches. Similarly, heavy alcohol consumption before sleeping also results in uneven sleep and early morning headaches and hangovers.

Both of the above causes for morning headaches could be resolved. You could talk to your doctor about the medication which is causing you to suffer from headaches and avoid overconsumption of alcohol to prevent hangovers.

Depression or anxiety related issues

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, chronic headaches are most commonly caused by anxiety and depression. These mental health conditions can also lead to insomnia which results in the frequency of morning headaches. A combination of treatments such as talk therapy and medication can help in the management of anxiety and depression to avoid falling prey to morning headaches.

Grinding your teeth

Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, occurs when you clench your jaw and grind your teeth during the night which results in disruptive sleep leading to an aching head in the morning. Along with finding healthy ways to manage stress, like exercise and meditation, improving your sleep hygiene habits may help to prevent nocturnal grinding and the headaches that can come as a result.

Early morning headaches should be treated according to the reason for its cause. Depending on the cause, you may be able to evaluate whether to treat it through changing your pillow or talking to your doctor for prescribing you with appropriate medication for sleeping better for the whole night and getting rid of the morning headaches.
