Is Himalayan Pink Salt the right choice for your diet?

Himalayan pink salt is a kind of rock salt. Its name derives from the fact that most of the salt is found near the foothills of Himalayas. This salt is the purest form of rock salt. It is composed of 98 percent sodium chloride and is quite similar to the normal table salt we use in our daily lives.

The remaining 2 percent is comprised of a combination of other minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which give it a pinkish colored hue.  Although many people describe the Himalayan pink salt be quite beneficial to health in terms of seasoning foods, preserving food, and bath salts, it does has some adverse effects too.

Risk of excess sodium intake

Sodium is an essential mineral for the body but only if it is consumed in the right amounts, can its benefits be reaped. Excessive consumption of sodium in the diet puts you at risk of high blood pressure which leads to other serious health issues such as strokes and cardiac arrest.

As the Himalayan pink salt is rich in sodium, people suffering from kidney and kidney problems should also limit their intake to avoid getting into serious health trouble.  When there is excessive sodium in your body, the body tries to excrete it out and when it fails to do so, fluid builds up which strains the heart.

More than required sodium present in the body is also linked to autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis. Other health conditions resulting from high sodium include osteoporosis, damage to the liver, and kidney failure. Thus doctors highly recommend not exceeding the allowed intake of sodium in your diet.

Risk of low iodine intake

Iodine is a mineral required to maintain the proper functioning of the thyroid gland and cell metabolism in the body. Iodine can be obtained through diet from fish, sea vegetables, dairy, eggs, and other foods as well. Iodized salt is another source to obtain iodine from.

The Himalayan pink salt does contain some iodine content but, that amount is certainly that contained in iodized salt. So, people suffering from iodine deficiency or are prone to become iodine deficient should be careful to opt for other choices than the Himalayan pink salt for their iodine intake.

Risk of high chloride intake

As the Himalayan pink salt contains chloride, sodium chloride, consuming excessive amounts of which can lead to a condition known as hyperchloremia. It is a condition associated with high bodily acidity along with dehydration and impaired kidney function. Too much acidity in the body causes the inefficient functioning of many cellular processes. Excessive chloride consumption can also cause insulin resistance and a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Himalayan pink salt bath risks

Adverse reactions associated with Himalayan pink salts are also linked to salt baths. Salt baths may increase pressure on the circulatory system, posing serious health concerns for those suffering from poor circulation. People suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems, and even pregnant women should consult a doctor before indulging in Himalayan pink salt baths to avoid any unwanted problems.

If you are a person who wants to enjoy more natural things, without any additives, then you can opt for Himalayan pink salt in your diet but, be careful of taking it in the recommended daily intake. Also, it is necessary for people with iodine deficiency to get the right amounts of iodine from other foods.
