Saline Solution: How to Prepare and Use as a Home Remedy?

A saline solution can do wonders for several conditions such as treating sore throat, healing wounds, and skin infections. It can be prepared in minutes with just two ingredients which are readily available in every kitchen. Wounds may take time to heal on their own. There are remedies that may be effective in speeding up the healing process. Saline water is the most convenient and easy way of healing wounds.

Saline water has many uses in medicine and is also available at local pharmacies. Although the homemade saline solution is easy and convenient to be made if the right method is followed.

How to Make Saline Solution for Wounds?

You will require the following things to prepare a saline solution at home:

  • Tap water or distilled water
  • Table salt
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • A clean jar
  • A measuring cup
  • A teaspoon
  • Baking soda (optional)

Stovetop Method:

Quantity to be Used: a Half teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of water.

  • Use pure iodine free salt that does not contain preservatives.
  • Put half teaspoon of salt in a cup or bowl.
  • Boil 1 cup of water for making the solution.
  • Mix the salt in water until it gets dissolved.
  • Add in a pinch of baking soda if required.
  • You may also store the saline solution on room temperature.

Microwave Method:                    

It is better to make fresh saline water for use as bacteria will start growing after 24 hours of preparation. Stovetop method is the most sterile method as it uses boiled water in preparing the saline solution. However, the microwave method is another quick way of preparing the solution. The quantities used will be the same whereas the solution will be kept in a microwave-safe container. Distilled water can be prepared at home or bought from a local pharmacy. It’s up to you what you choose.

Distilled Method:

  • Add in half teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of distilled water.
  • Refrigerate the solution
  • The solution may last up to 1 month.

How Can the Saline Solution Be Used?

Saline solution has multiple uses as its effectiveness has always proved helpful for various conditions. It is easy to prepare and has become a universal remedy for many health conditions providing immediate relief from the symptoms.

Wounds

The saline solution can be used for healing wounds, cuts, and infections. Applying saline solution to the wound can help remove bacteria from the skin which will reduce the likelihood of infections. A normal saline solution is mild and has the same concentration as that of tears and saliva. It will not burn wounds or cause irritation. Also, studies suggest that tap water can be useful for wounds as well as it has some salt content in it.

Nasal Irrigation

Saline solution has the properties for effective nasal washing which washes away all debris along with it. Nasal irrigation can give relief from close nose, and prevent sinus. Tilt your head towards right over a sink. Pour saline solution into the left nostril which should come out from the right nostril then. Repeat on the other side for thorough cleansing. You may adjust your head to pour out the solution out of your nostrils.

Contact Solution

Contact solution has the same salinity as tears and it can be used for rinsing contact lenses. It is the same solution used for moistening the lenses before application. However, it is recommended that you use a commercial cleaning solution that is safe and prevents infection.

Piercings

Piercings may be soaked in a saline solution to prevent infections. Salinity is good for clearing out debris and increasing blood flow.

Eye Wash

Saline solution can help wash away soap or an irritant in the eyes as it resembles tears.

Saline solution has several uses but it can contain bacteria if kept for a longer period of time. It is better to prepare a fresh solution and take care of cleanliness. It is also advised to talk to your doctor before applying the saline solution to wounds as the salinity may differ and cause harm to the cuts instead.
