Miscarriages are heartbreaking and unfortunately very common in early pregnancies. 15 to 20 percent of pregnancies end up in a loss after being confirmed. Couples are often advised to keep their pregnancy a secret until the first trimester so that the chances of a miscarriage drop significantly. This stigma of having faced a loss because of disclosing the news has arose many myths surrounding it.

Occurrence of a miscarriage may make a couple feel devastated at their loss. It is true that nothing can fulfil the emptiness felt inside, and so it is better to share your feelings with a person you trust. Talking to someone about it will make you feel better and relaxed.

What Causes a Miscarriage?

Early miscarriages are mostly caused because of the abnormal number of chromosomes resulting in the fetus which cannot survive longer. Nature has its own way to remove such cells on its own which is known as an early miscarriage. While such a miscarriage is no one to blame for, people often associate their act or deficiencies with the loss. This is not true in most cases and most of the sayings are just myths.

What do Myths Say About Miscarriages?

People have associated a number of myths with miscarriages as it becomes a stigma in many cultures. Couples are frightrned by most of them and hence take extra precautions to avoid any such occurence. Although being cautious during the pregnancy phase is a good thing but it gets over the limit most of the times and couples often get stressed by the thought of it only.

Myth- Its Mother’s Fault

A woman who has had a miscarriage feels isolated as she does not talk about it to anyone. She will think that she did something wrong which has resulted in a miscarriage although this is not true in most cases. A pregnancy that has to succeed cannot be terminated by simple acts unless abortion is wanted. Eating something or doing strenuous exercise is not always the reason for an occurring miscarriage.

Most early miscarriages happen because of the abnormality in chromosomes as the embryo does not get stable with three copies of chromosomes instead of 2 in a cell. These are common genetic errors that can occur in any pregnancy regardless of how fertile a woman is. So, it is not a woman’s fault.

Myth- Some is Wrong with the Mother

It is assumed that if the chromosomes are normal then something must be wrong with the mother. This is not the case as fetus can be malformed because of various reasons.

Multiple Miscarriages Mean You are Infertile

The most common myth is that a woman who has had multiple miscarriages is infertile and that is the reason behind. most women will have one or two miscarriages only to follow up a successful pregnancy. However, only a small percentage of women will have 3 or more in a row. But then again, there is reason for hope of having a successful pregnancy even after that.

Miscarriage does not mean in any way that the next pregnancy cannot br successful. Also, if there are underlying medical disorders that are the reason for miscarriages, most of them are treatable such as thyroid issues, uterine growth, or blood clotting disorders.

Myth- Get Pregnant Just After Miscarriage

Researches have shown that women who got pregnant within six months of a miscarriage were less likely to have it again. Also, there is less risk of an ectopic pregnancy after having a miscarriage. So, the myth that the body needs to rest for several months after miscarriage is not true as the studies suggest the opposite. Your body will adjust the timings itself if it is not yet ready for a pregnancy and nothing you do can prevent a pregnancy or miscarriage in most of the cases.

Myth- Physical and Emotional Stress Cause Miscarriage

Heavy lifting is associated with a miscarriage as the abdominal muscles cannot hold stress. This is not true in all cases as heavy lifting cannot be directly linked to cause a miscarriage. Neither is emotional stress a particular reason for a miscarriage. However, it is said that women should try and avoid stress as much as possible to have a healthy pregnancy. The fact cannot be denied that depression and mental stress affects the nervous system of the growing baby which is why pregnant women should keep themselves happy.

Extreme stress and depression can cause preterm birth or low birth weight of the baby. The baby may also have behavioral problems which are the reasons for avoiding stress at all costs.

Myth – Don’t Tell Anyone About Miscarriage

Not telling anyone will not make any change in the pregnancy. These are just myths and perceptions in different cultures where people want to keep themselves safe from evil eye. While there is no harm in hiding the event, it will be better yo share your feelings with trusted people so you may feel better and relaxed.

Myth – Don’t Exercise to Prevent Miscarriage

Women tend to lay off exercises in pregnancy so as to avoid miscarriage. This is not useful as the body needs some sort of physical activity to keep blood flow healthy. However, some strenuous exercises can be harmful and should be avoided as the abdominal muscles get strained.

Myth – Miscarriage means You Will Have Another too

The one time occurrence of a miscarriage does not mean that it is likely to happen again. Only 1 percent of women have recurrent miscarriages because of specific reasons. However, the risk of miscarriages increases if you have had more than 2 in a row. But even then you have hope for a successful pregnancy ahead. There is no reason of nit getting pregnant if your body has responded before.

Myth – Hormonal Birth Control Pills Increase the Risk of Miscarriage

Hormonal birth control pills have been linked to miscarriages for a long time. Since these pills are known to change the hormones, it is said that the body will not respond well in case of a pregnancy. All contraceptive methods should be elimintaed well before you want to get pregnant so that any risks of miscarriage can be minimized.

Are there any Precautions to Avoid Miscarriages?

Most of the myths about miscarriages are harmful for women as they get stressed emotionally. They think whether they have done something wrong or there is something wrong with their body that is not able to have a successful pregnancy. While there are certain behaviors that may lead to miscarriage and should be avoided, others are not. The precautionary measures to take to avoid a pregnancy loss are discussed to make women aware of what is good and what is bad for them during that phase.

Smoking, drinking alcohol, and chronic illnesses are the reason for miscarriage although most miscarriage result because of genetic abnormalities. There are tests performed to diagnose any underlying condition responsible for a miscarriage although it is only done in case of recurrent miscarriages. Most women will eventually have a successful pregnancy after one or even two losses and they get cautious after that.

People have also related foods to cause miscarriages particularly in the early pregnancy phase. However, doctors do not believe in this as nature only provides nutrition and nothing can harm if taken in moderation.
