Vitamins are essential for vital growth and functioning of the human body. Vitamin D is needed so that calcium can be absorbed in the body for strengthening bones.

Deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to several problems such as soft bones causing Rickets in children, prostrate cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, depression, heart disease, and weight gain.

What is the Role of Vitamin D in Human Body?

As discussed, Vitamin D deficiency van lead to several health problems abd therefore it is crucially important to have the levels checked and maintained. Vitamin D has been linked with overall wellness of the human body system. It can prevent autism which is why pregnant women are given vitamin D supplements throughout.

Vitamin D lowers the risk of diseases such as autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, and even neuromuscular diseases. Although vitamin D is so important for the human body, many people are having its deficiency.

Some people live in areas where they are not exposed to much sunlight for their skin to absorb whereas some people have dark skin which again does not allow vitamin D production.


Less exposure to sunlight means low vitamin D levels which will therefore cause lower immunity and more illness. There are receptors for vitamin D all over the body and so do the immune cells also have them. Vitamin D deficiency is never good for your overall system.


Vitamin D works directly for muscle strength as it enhances the ability of muscles to contract efficiently. Muscles grow stronger when they contract and relax and the breakdown of vitamin D offers the muscles with a metabolite which helps them do so.


Vitamin D and calcium go hand in hand as the vitamin D helps absorb calcium in the body which is useful for strengthening bones. It can prevent fractures as a result of stronger bones and muscle contractions which will improve balance and prevent falls.


Vitamin D helps in treating kidney disease as it is a fat soluble vitamin. Kidney function can be regulated with adequate levels of vitamin D.


Depression and low mood is ofteb linked to lower levels of vitamin D. Scientific evidence clarifies that feeling low can be because of vitamin D deficiency and the effects of vitamin D3 were very similar to that of anti depressants.


The anti inflammatory properties of vitamin D are beneficial for the health of lungs.


There is an inverse relation of vitamin D and hypertension which means higher vitamin D levels means lower blood pressure and vice versa. The deficiency of vitamin D will therefore do harm foe the heart.

There is a strain on the blood vessels because of increased blood pressure which also narrows the coronary arteries causing more damage. All these occurrences will increase chances of heart stroke.

Cognitive Function

Vitamin D deficiency is also linked with cognitive impairment as it has neuroprotective roles in the body. It is seen that adults having low levels of vitamin D are at an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Weight Loss

The hungry hormone known as leptin does not work well if there is a vitamin D deficiency and this is known to cause weight gain. The brain does not receive signals when your stomach is full and you end up eating more. Overcoming the deficiency will eventually restore the function of leptin hormone and you will then be able to lose weight.
