U.S. FDA Has Raised Legal Age to Smoke and Buy Tobacco Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced the changed of the legal age to smoke and to buy tobacco products on its website. U.S. President Trump has risen the minimum official age for smoking and for buying tobacco products while approving the changes in the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The new legal smoking age is now 21 in Wasilla and the rest of the country and prohibited the sales of tobacco and vaping products to anyone under the age of 21.

The recent law enacted by Congress also applies to all the tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and that heat a liquid that contains nicotine. Anyone under 21 can’t buy cigars, cigarettes, or any kind of tobacco product in the United States. It is now illegal also for retailers to sell products to underage people. As it is now the federal law, all the states must have to obey. This will likely save millions of lives.

New FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said that this is a major step for protecting the next generation from tobacco addition.

According to the report, the national data revealed that 95% of adult smokers start smoking before turning 21. The age ranges 18 to 21 are the most critical period at which many people start smoking and become daily users from the initial experimental smoking. According to the health department, the rates of teens getting hospitalized are increasing because of the regularly vaping tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products and nicotine.

People showed a different response to this new update. Those who are supporting the age limit change believe that it will keep the younger people away from the tobacco and minimize access.

One of the executive directors of the American Lung Association, Marge Stoneking said that this change will minimize access as most of the high school students don’t have friends of age 21 but they do have friends of 19 ages. In these developmental ages, the brains of students are prepped for the development of addiction pathways, particularly susceptible to the nicotine.

Implementation of this new change needs some other steps as the FDA announced that they will issue additional required information. FDA currently issued new draft guidance for cigarette advertising and packaging on which the agency is recently accepting public comments but it is one of those that have been already adopted by various states nationwide.

The change also bought the confusion. The National Association of Convenience Stores is among those groups who thought it had many months before the recent age law effect. The FDA doesn’t mention the measures to enforce this new law. The FDA also hasn’t mentioned the punishment for the violators. These decisions will be declared later.

The FDA announced that the recent rule change involves existing law so that this new age limit will take effect immediately. Lawmakers are attempting to prevent another public health crisis. This move could save thousands of lives.
