Research reveals COVID-19 can’t be transmitted from a mother to baby

Coronavirus is creating headlines all over the world and every day adds more to the total number of infected patients. But finally here is good news that it is not transmitted from a pregnant mother to the baby.

The virus which has now spread to 140 countries was highly suspected to be transmitted to an unborn baby, through mother. But a report published in the journal Frontiers in Pediatrics” reveals that actually it doesn’t.

This stud is second of its type based on coronavirus that is to ensure that newborn babies aren’t infected with coronavirus if their mothers are infected. The results are confirmed after studying four participants all of which were infected during their pregnancy. All four women gave birth to their babies at Wuhan’s Union Hospital and none of their babies was infected.

While Wuhan city of the Hubei province is the hub of this disease, the coronavirus COVID-19 has now infected more than 120,000 people all around the world. It has killed nearly 4,000 people and left thousands of others infected.

People showing symptoms such as sneezing, cough, fever are taken seriously and provided with immediate treatment. Severe cases of this infection are admitted to intensive care. In the case of this study, all four babies didn’t show any symptoms associated with coronavirus.

Although all of them were initially kept at neonatal intensive care units and were fed on formula milk. Three of these newborns were tested negative for coronavirus after their throat swab was tested. However, the parents of the fourth child didn’t allow for obtaining a sample but there are high chances that he is also coronavirus negative.

One among these babies experienced troubled breathing initially but he was stable after being treated with non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Two of these babies experienced skin rashes but they vanished soon without any treatment.

This evidence doesn’t conclude if coronavirus has caused any of these symptoms or not. The study author Dr. Yalan Liu at Huazhong from the University of Science and Technology says that the research team isn’t sure if these symptoms are due to their mothers’ infection or not.

The other study based on pregnant mothers infected with coronavirus also showed no possibility of the virus being transmitted to the newborns. All these births in this study were done through C-sections. In addition to that, three babies in this current study were also born with C-section.

Liu says that it seems like C-section is a lot more safer for these babies to prevent infections and transmission. Upon asking if typical vaginal delivery is safe or not; Liu said the information is not sufficient to make a statement on this. Hence it requires more research.

Although the previous study also suggested the same as that of this study. But it was necessary to confirm the results. Liu says that SARS and MERS are linked transmission from mother to the unborn child. If transmitted, it could cause severe maternal illness, abortion, stillbirth or even death of the mother.

The research team is collecting more samples from the babies to confirm if the newborns re completely protected from coronavirus or not.
