Viagra is Cheaper and More Accessible Now Than Birth Control in the US

The Supreme Court gave its ruling on Wednesday which favors the Trump Administration. The ruling said that the employers do not have to provide free birth control to their workers from now. The policy was introduced during the Obama-era which covered the birth control needs under the “contraceptive mandate”.

The decision gives all institutes and organizations against female contraception the option to take back the facility of providing free birth control.

The women are already facing issues in accessing the contraceptives due to coronavirus pandemic. At such time, this decision is facing severe backlash from women empowerment organizations. The various organizations of human rights are also against this ruling by the Supreme Court.

Some people also say that this ruling is a violation of women’s rights. This opinion comes forward as Viagra is easily accessible to men, according to some people. They said that this decision depicts the importance of the sexual pleasure of men is more than a basic need of women.

According to the statistics of the National Women’s Law Center, there are currently 61.4 females in the US benefitting from the free birth control policy under Obamacare. However, after the ruling, 126,000 females will not have access to contraceptives.

This ruling during the coronavirus pandemic is extremely damaging. Due to the global pandemic, a lot of women do not have access to contraceptives. Also, many women need birth control as a lot of people want to delay childbirth due to coronavirus. Some people also need birth control medicines due to their health conditions and no only to prevent pregnancy.

The decision sparked rage among the public and political figures. Many people came on social media and said that the government values the sexual pleasure of men more than the health of women. Viagra is very easily accessible in the country and available at much cheaper rates than female contraceptives. Hence, many people showed their outrage over the court ruling. Although many pharmaceutical companies say that birth control is more easily accessible than before, this court ruling will dramatically decrease the chance of females getting free birth control.

The coronavirus pandemic affected the lifestyle of millions of families. Many people have now decided to halt their plans of growing their families or getting pregnant amid a crisis. This sparks an increased requirement for birth control. Many women also relied on the free contraceptives provided by their organizations, institutes, or universities.

Even if Viagra is more easily available in the US or not, this ruling will create a problem for a lot of women. In the meantime, Jessica Nouhavandi, a pharmacist says that birth control and erectile dysfunction are not equally covered by health insurance companies. Many companies offer birth control for women but erectile dysfunction is not usually considered.

Nouhavandi also said that the treatment of erectile dysfunction is a lifestyle category disease and people have the option if they want to treat it or not. She also said that many insurance companies cover the birth control needs of women. Although the court ruling limits access to several women, a lot of insurance companies do offer it.
