Covid-19 Cases in the US are Much Higher Than Reported Numbers, CDC Report

The United States is currently leading with the most cases of coronavirus in the world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention kept a track of the cases for the past months. However, the CDC recently said that the Covid-19 cases in the US are much higher than the reported number. The cases can be twice or up to 13 times more than the recorded patients in some parts of the country.

The study shows that asymptomatic people mainly spread the virus around their community. They are, however, not aware of their infection since they do not show any symptoms. The highest number of Covid-19 cases in the US recorded in New York City. But the state is still far away from gaining herd immunity to the virus.

Herd immunity is the level of immunity against the virus in a community after which the virus stops spreading any further in that community. New York City has still not reached herd immunity because it is still less than 60%. It is the required rate of infection to reach herd immunity in the state.

Dr. Fiona Havers is a researcher at the CDC and she led this study. This study was based on the antibody testing of coronavirus patients. She said that this study indicates that the actual number of Covid-19 cases in the US are a lot higher than the reported ones.

Dr. Havers also said that most of the infected people possibly carried no symptoms of infection. Also, they might have suffered from a mild illness. According to a study, 40% of coronavirus patients have no visible symptoms of infection. However, they can transmit this infection in their community.

The current rate of testing of Covid-19 cases in the US is 700,000 individuals every day. The latest findings show that the government needs to increase the testing capacity in different parts of the US. It is essential to control the spread of coronavirus infection.

According to the CDC, the infections are 13 times more than the reported numbers in Missouri. This shows the state could not test those individuals who mainly contributed to the spread of infection. Dr. Havers suggested the public wear face masks and maintain social distancing at all times. Also, people should use a hand wash multiple times a day. This can help possible carriers avoid spreading the infection.

The researchers involved in this study took the blood sample of the previously hospitalized coronavirus patients. They tested their samples for the presence of antibodies against coronavirus. The findings of this study indicate that only a small population carried the coronavirus infection. This shows that the reported cases are much lower than the actual Covid-19 cases in the US.

The health experts mentioned that keeping a track of cases is essential to control the spread of the virus. It can give useful information about the transmission of the virus and the ability of the state to fight the infection. Although the people involved in this study do not represent the whole population, it gives some insight into the actual Covid-19 cases in the US.
