Can Plant-based Diet Lead to Risk-free and Disease-free Aging??

A vegan or plant-based diet is becoming extremely popular among the new generation. It is particularly famous in the US and many people prefer it over the regular diet. A report published in 2017 showed that the consumers of the vegan diet increased from 1% to 6% within 3 years.

The latest review shows that the vegan diet can also protect from deadly diseases. These include diabetes type 2 which is a lifelong disease. It also reduces the death associated with cardiometabolic diseases in the US.

The review was led by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). They published the review in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Hana Kahleova, M.D., Ph.D. is the director of clinical research at PCRM and also the first author of this review. She said that the healthcare system is currently under a lot of pressure. Considering this, the older population will double by the year 2050. There are currently 841 million individuals age 60 and above. This number will double to 2B by that time.

Dr. Kahleova along her research team found after the review that a vegan diet helps reduce the risk of major diseases. It helps mitigate the risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes type 2. These diseases are fatal in severe conditions and mainly occur later in life. Hence, a plant-based diet is effective in lowering the risk of these health conditions over time.

The evidence from the studies shows that a vegan diet reduces the risk of a disease called metabolic syndrome. This syndrome increases the chance of a person developing these deadly diseases. This diet helps reduce the risk of heart attack by nearly 40 percent.

Studies also suggest that people who prefer a vegan diet have a longer life. The population in Japan tends to live longer than any other population in the world. The people from Okinawa, located in Japan take a plant-based diet and show the greatest life expectancy in the whole world.

The people in such areas have a lifestyle consisting of some sort of physical activity. Also, they do not smoke which reduces the risk of diseases. People from Okinawa prefer a diet consisting of green vegetables, soy, and sweet potatoes.

This shows that people who have a plant-based diet have a higher life expectancy as well as a lower risk of fatal diseases. This diet is high in nutrition and less fat which makes it more beneficial than any other omnivorous diet.
