It is common to see catchy colorful LED lights used in homes, offices, and street lights, but the researchers have shown concern over the use of this type of light. A research study reveals that exposing a person to blue LED light can cause bowel cancer and many other types of cancer. This risk is 60% higher than those who are not exposed to blue LED lights.
This new study was conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). The research team went through the complete medical history and epidemiological details of more than 2000 adult people from Barcelona and Madrid. Out of these 660 were suffering from bowel cancer.
Those who were working in the night shift were not made a part of this study as the circadian cycle was considered as a controlling factor in this study. To measure the intensity of total artificial light in Barcelona and Madrid, the research team contacted International Space Station and got the images.
Based on these images, the predicted that a person who had the maximum exposure to the artificial blue light was at a 60% higher risk of cancer as compared to the less-exposed people. Whether blue LED light can cause bowl cancer or not is no more a question but how is it initiated still remains unclear.
The researchers assume that this blue light has some impact on the circadian cycle and a disturbance in it can cause bowel cancer. Generally, the blue light is liked with the reduced capacity of melatonin production. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that regulates the circadian rhythm and improves mood.
Dr. Manolis Kogevinas from ISGlobal says that this postulate of blue LED light can cause bowel cancer is still into an initial phase and required detailed work to understand the mechanism involved in it. he also shares that this study has found a connection between the blue light and cancer but it hasn’t studied the visual light. There is no such connection determined for other artificially colored lights.
One interesting factor here is that the researchers didn’t account for the home-based devices that emit blue light such as phones and laptops. Yet, Dr. Kogevinas is hopeful to evaluate other light sources to find their link with cancer. According to him, these digital devices are used by a large number of people on a daily basis, suggesting they have to be checked for potential health risks.
It is hard to imagine anyone living without a computer, phone, or tablet these days. One way or the other, it is a requirement and many jobs rely on such devices. The increased usage and internet addicts spend even more time exposing themselves to artificial light emitted by these devices which is why it is necessary to find out the risks associated with the devices.

Anyways, the prolonged exposure to any colorful light or the blue LED light can cause bowel cancer and many other diseases.
On this new research finding, the chief executive at Bowel Cancer UK, Genevieve Edwards as given his comments saying that this study has missed a major factor- lifestyle. According to Edwards, the behavior, and habits of a person can further increase this risk of cancer linked with artificial light sources.
Right now it is hard to tell how artificial light induces cancer but this field could be explained further to know the complete process.
