Painkillers are Harmful for Chronic Pain Treatment: Experts Claim

Painkillers are commonly used drugs found in every household. While many people use these to get rid of a headache or body pain, many people take it as a chronic pain treatment. However, health officials said that pain killers are not a solution to chronic pain.

People with chronic pain should not be prescribed pain killers. These include common drugs such as Ibuprofen and Paracetamol. These drugs are not beneficial in the long term and cause harm to health.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said that pain killers such as opioids or even aspirin work as a chronic pain treatment. There is no such evidence that these drugs are helpful for such patients. However, these painkillers can cause some harm to the patient. Some recent evidence shows that these drugs can lead to addiction.

According to NHS, paracetamol is safe for patients even if used for years. However, according to Nice, doctors should not prescribe paracetamol and other painkillers for chronic pain treatment. They recommend other therapies for the treatment of such patients. These include antidepressants, acupuncture, and different exercises that relieve pain.

According to Nice, Chronic pain is not always a consequence of another health condition. This is a separate condition in itself and the experts need to cater it accordingly. Health professionals usually refer to chronic pain as a symptom that lasts for a few months. However, it is fairly difficult to treat chronic pain. It also causes frustration and disability in the patient.

Previous studies show that the patients who take drugs such as aspirin, opioids, or ibuprofen face poor functioning of the body over time. These drugs lead to somewhat physical and psychological disabilities over prolonged usage.

The NHS states currently that the use of painkiller drugs is safe for patients. Chronic pain can lead to inactivity in the patient. Hence, these drugs help prevent that, according to the NHS. The website warns consumers to use the drugs according to recommendations. It suggests taking paracetamol over several years. However, the patient should only take it according to the recommended dosage.

Paul Chrisp is a director at Nice for the center of guidelines. He said that sometimes several treatments and therapies do not work effectively for the patient. The health experts and professionals should understand how the condition affects the patients. It is usually frustrating for not only the patients but also affects the people around him.

The data collected from 23 studies show that different exercises help relieve pain in patients. Moreover, 22 studies showed that exercising also helps improve lifestyle. Hence, Nice recommends physical therapy, acupuncture, and other group exercises for people with chronic pain.

There is also evidence that antidepressants are effective in such conditions. However, the patient should use these drugs carefully as the patient can suffer from withdrawal symptoms. These include insomnia and dizziness. Also, the usage of such drugs should be stopped if they are not effective against the pain.
