Turmeric is a highly popular spice that is sometimes referred to as ‘the golden spice’. It is loaded with a number of medicinal effects but the benefits of turmeric for coronavirus are not much talked about.
This spice is made from the root part of the plant which typically grows in Southeast Asia and shares the family with ginger. It is commonly used in almost all native Asian cuisines and has a distinctive role in traditional Chinese and Ayurveda medicine.
Two typical roles of turmeric are pain relief and anti-inflammatory benefits for which it has been used for centuries. Even western medicines are using turmeric in their formulation to enhance their effects.
Although it doesn’t look like turmeric would have any benefits for coronavirus patients but some of the studies find “curcumin” in turmeric to help them. Curcumin is an active ingredient in turmeric which can typically prevent various gastroenteritis-causing viruses.
A higher dose of this virus can also kill other viruses even the coronavirus, some researchers believe. It means those who use turmeric in their routine are at low risk of getting infected with the coronavirus.
An original study conducted on certain Ayurvedic components held by the Centre for Advanced Research (CFAR) at KGMU says that coronavirus can effectively kill the virus. This study is published in Springer Nature journal of viral diseases.
This study explores the connection between popular herbal ingredients and the virus by using a host protein. SARS-Cov-2 is the virus that causes this infection and the studies from this result prove that some of the Ayurvedic ingredients like curcumin, Nimbin, and Ashwagandha can restrict coronavirus to attach to the host cell through the ACE2 receptor.
Other benefits of turmeric include the following.
Inflammation– it reduces inflammation by working on free radical treatment which often increases the risk of certain diseases.
Arthritis relief– taking only 500mg turmeric extract a few times of day helps to relieve arthritis-related pain in the patients.
Blood vessels repairing- the body automatically heals itself by reducing blood pressure, prevent plaque formation, and clots in the blood, all of which are associated with heart diseases.
Immunity boost- turmeric works on immunity and it plays a prebiotic role in improving gut health. It induces overall wellness making a person less likely to fall for chronic diseases.
Turmeric contains a huge number of phytochemicals that act upon the body to bring all these effects. It also contains a substantial amount of vitamin C which is necessarily required for the immune system to work. Additionally, it contains manganese, iron, and some part of potassium in it.
The benefits of turmeric for coronavirus are desirable but it requires more evidence to find out and confirm the role played by curcumin in coronavirus patients. In any case, adding turmeric powder in routine is beneficial for health as it works on immunity and saves a person from falling sick frequently.
