Benefits and Downsides of the Popular Vegan Butter

Organic and plant-based food gained popularity over the past decade. People started to make a more conscious decision about the food they intake. Also, vegan food has numerous health benefits as well as good for the environment. Some of the popular foods dominating the market are vegan butter and cheese and milk alternatives.

Vegan butter also is known as plant-based butter has a lot of hype surrounding it. It is a substitute for traditional dairy butter. It is obtained through some oils derived from plants combined with water. This can include a variety of oils or coconut, olive, palm, or avocado oil.

Vegan butter consists of some additional substitutes to increase the shelf life and provide similar flavor to dairy butter. It contains food colorings, additional flavor, emulsifiers, and salt. This enhances the texture of the product and makes it more similar to traditional butter.

This product seems closely related to margarine but it is completely different from it. Margarine might include some traces of dairy ingredients. However, plant-based butter solely consists of products derived from plants.

Vegan butter mainly consists of oils which are a form of fat. Hence, they have a high-fat content. However, the fat content of every product can vary depending upon the plant-derived oil used in it. This non-dairy product has numerous health benefits and also beneficial for the environment.

Butter derived from plant-based products has a high content of unsaturated fats. This type of fats is good for health and helps maintain body weight and blood sugar levels. Some studies also suggest that it can help lower the risk of heart disease and obesity.

The saturated fat content of vegan butter is quite low. According to different studies, this type of fat increases the risk of heart disease and weight gain. This also consists of a higher level of LDL which is a type of cholesterol bad for health.

Food rich in saturated fat can also increase inflammation in the body. Meanwhile, a vegan diet provides the opposite benefits and promotes a healthier heart and body. But some plant-derived oils contain a high level of saturated fats. These mainly include palm oil and coconut oil.

Even though plant-based butter seems like a healthier alternative, there are some downsides to it. Vegan butter can be highly processed which increases the risk of diseases. It contains a high amount of preservatives and artificial flavors. Also, dairy butter has a higher level of nutrition than vegan butter.

Plant-based diet tends to be on the pricier side due to more expensive ingredients. Also, it is an extensive process to make plant-based alternatives to regular foods which accounts for a higher price point.

Plant-based butter also consists of potential allergens. Although it is safe for lactose intolerant people, it might contain several allergens. These products might consist of gluten, soy, and nuts. This can cause allergic reactions to several people.

Both types of butter have their own benefits ad downsides. However, both of these products are calorie-rich and therefore, you should only intake in moderate amount in day to day life.
