Weird Hypertension Myths that You Should Never Believe

High blood pressure also called hypertension is one of the most common health problems all around the world. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 45% of US adults are living with hypertension. Many of them don’t even take it seriously because of the weird hypertension myths that they hear and believe. On the other side, many people don’t even believe that they have an underlying health problem which can take their life.

According to The World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1.13 billion individuals are a victim of hypertension globally. Despite this health problem is extremely common, there are many misunderstandings and myths about hypertension that are still believed.

Following are five bizarre hypertension myths that you should never believe.

Hypertension is not a disease.

Hypertension is a serious medical condition and avoiding the treatment is not going to make it better. If you choose to ignore getting medical advice on uncontrollable blood pressure, you are subjecting yourself to a number of health problems such as heart attack, kidney diseases, sexual dysfunction, and heart failure.

Genetic hypertension is untreatable

If hypertension runs in your family, it doesn’t mean it is not treatable. There is plenty of research that shows that hypertension has no such genetic link. A study based on hypertension analysis in three generations estimated that early onset of hypertension symptoms can save you from hypertension risks. However, it doesn’t mean that it is completely inevitable even for the genetically vulnerable class. Other people, without genetic linkage, can get hypertension can develop hypertension by certain dietary and lifestyle changes.

You can’t prevent hypertension in old age

This is probably one of the most famous hypertension myths that old age is a risk factor for high blood pressure. Uncontrollably higher blood pressure is nowhere normal and even if a person is aging, it is not something that everyone experiences. You might experience that most hypertensive patients are old age patients but age is not a risk factor for it. Middle-aged people and even younger adults can also fall for it.

You will only get symptoms if you are diagnosed with hypertension

While most people believe it but there is no confirmation that only blood pressure patients can experience these symptoms and other people who are not diagnosed with this disease can not experience hypertension. The only way you can see if you have hypertension is by checking the blood pressure. There are no other signs which can tell if you have hypertension unless your blood pressure becomes incredibly high.  In the US alone nearly 75 million individuals are living with hypertension, some  11 million people have no idea if they have hypertension.

Hypertension is reversible

Do not believe these hypertension myths if someone says that they have found a permanent treatment for hypertension. There is no treatment that can reverse hypertension but there are many ways that can help to manage the symptoms, making it less likely to affect your health.

People with hypertension are asked to limit their alcohol intake, change their diet, lower stress levels, and start doing exercise.
