The delta variant is responsible for most of the new Covid-19 cases in the US. Generally, this variant causes severe infection and often leads to hospitalization. As a result, the number of hospitalizations also increased and, most of them account for the unvaccinated people.
The health officials and experts warn that this surge in the coronavirus will only get worse as long as people do not vaccinate themselves. According to Dr. Peter Hotez from Texas Children’s Hospital, things will get worse with a large number of unvaccinated people.
The vaccination rate lagged in the southern states of the US and led to a rise in the Covid-19 cases. Recently, the coronavirus cases in Georgia tripled in the past two weeks. The health commissioner of Georgia, Dr. Kathleen E. Toomey said that the number of cases in the state will keep growing. Those who did not receive the vaccine or skipped their second dose are at a high risk of contracting the virus. Also, they are more likely to spread the virus in their community.
The recent data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that the vaccination rate is increasing in the country. In addition, the rate is particularly higher in the regions where it was previously low.
The data from the CDC also shows that the US authorities administered 652,084 shots per day on average. This average is 27% higher as compared to the average recorded three weeks ago.
Recently, the CDC also updated its mask mandate and advised the vaccinated people to wear their masks indoors. This mandate is to prevent the spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus.
The coronavirus cases began to increase rapidly as soon as the delta variant hit the US. As a result, it became the dominant strain in most of the new infections because of its highly contagious nature. Also, most of the unvaccinated people reported contracting this new variant of the virus.
As of now, this variant increased the number of hospitalizations and severe infection cases across the country. The spread of this variant remained significantly higher in the states with a low rate of vaccination. This shows that the variant spreads rapidly among unvaccinated people which led to an increase in the severe Covid-19 cases.
Mississippi is one of the states in the US with the lowest rate of vaccination. The state is currently under a crisis as the hospitalizations skyrocketed over the past weeks. Also, most of these severe cases appear among young unvaccinated individuals.
Some hospitals in the US also halted surgical procedures and other treatments because of the demand for ICU beds for Covid-19 patients. According to health officials, the situation is getting worse in the country as a huge population is still unvaccinated. Also, many experts suggest the surge will only go higher if the rate of vaccination remains low.
Apart from urging people to stay cautious and continue wearing masks, the authorities also suggest getting the vaccine as soon as possible. As of now, the vaccine is the only way to control the surge in the Covid-19 cases.
